A Kuba tribal storage box, traditionally known as an ngedi mu ntey, is a hand-carved wooden or raffia container made by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Historically used to store red camwood (tukula) powder and personal valuables, they are renowned for their geometric, incised patterns and half-moon shapes.
Key Features of Kuba Boxes
Cultural Significance: These containers were high-status prestige objects. The tukula powder kept inside them was highly prized for body adornment, rituals, and textile dyeing.
Design & Craftsmanship: Carved from indigenous hardwoods or woven from raffia palm fibers, the boxes are covered in intricate geometric patterns. These motifs frequently mirror the famous geometric designs found in Kuba cut-pile embroidered textiles.
Common Shapes: While they appear in various sizes, traditional carved wooden boxes are often semi-circular or "half-moon" shaped.
