The Bakongo (Kongo) people traditionally carve their powerful ritual figures and statues (nkisi or power figures) from local tropical hardwood trees, such as Vitex thonneri (often referred to as Congolese Vitem), a dense, durable wood available in the Central African rainforest and river region.
